Café Culture: The History and Significance of Coffee Houses in Egyptian Traditional Musical Culture

For centuries, coffee houses have been important gathering places for Egypt’s professional entertainers.  These spaces have long functioned as sites of networking and negotiation among traditional musicians, as well as staging points for the business of meeting and negotiating with customers.  Join Nisaa for a historical and cultural overview of the musicians’ qahwa (coffee house), including pre-recorded information shared by legendary Muhammad Ali Street musician Reda Henkesh.  Learn about the history of these important spaces, including the famous coffee houses of Muhammad Ali Street in Cairo and Siyam Street in Mansoura, and experience Reda’s firsthand knowledge and insights, as he shares the insider perspective.  Step into a world rarely experienced by people outside of Egypt’s traditional musical culture.

Nisaa (Heather D. Ward) is a Middle Eastern dance instructor, performer, and researcher based in St. Louis, Missouri.  Nisaa’s mission is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the complexity, diversity, and beauty of Middle Eastern dance forms.  www.bellydancewithnisaa.com
