Zara will explain the development of modern ‘street’ music.  What is hip and how it has developed. Where does shaabi come from and how has it changed over the years?  It’s social context and history.
What is the difference between shaabi and maharaganat?
All these questions – and more – answered.

Professional dancer, Zara Abdelrahman has a unique insight into the cultural and social history of music and dance in Egypt.  Her father’s family are based in Cairo, her English mum is in the UK.  Zara has experienced the different cultures and can explain references to each.  Zara also has a free on line newsletter you can subscribe to.

This 1 hour zoom talk is hosted by Kay Taylor of BellyDance Now.  Our guest speaker issues Zara Abdelrahman.  There will be the opportunity for questions as well.
