NEW TO FANTASIA 2025:  The Levana Cup

This year we are hosting a live tabla solo competition.  Spaces are limited.  This is an exciting opportunity to challenge yourself and work with an amazing tabla player live on stage.  Bring your own brand of magic and wow your audience.  Just enjoy the experience.
You will perform a live 2 minute tabla solo with our master percussionist and tabla player:  Joelle Barker.

There are two categories:

✨Live drum solo: this is your category if you haven’t danced much to live music but really want to challenge yourself and work on your development as a dancer.

👑Live Drum solo Queen: for the competition girlies and semi-professional dancers. This is your time to shine and show our panel of judges your personality and skills!

Our panel of judges will take into account the following:
Level of difficulty / Technique / Movement quality
Use of space / angles
Creativity and Inventiveness
Musicality / use of phrasing
Appearance / Charisma
Our judges decisions are final.
The winner receives the very first ‘Levana Cup’.

Competitors should meet at 17.30 in reception, ready to perform – Kay and Joelle will explain the format of tabla solos and how Joelle will cue an ending to enable you to finish together. We will have an assistant sat with Joelle on stage to signal to you both when you have 30 seconds left enabling you to bring your solo to a close.  If you do not lead the close, Joelle will do so.
Our competition will start at 18.00
There will be a short pause between each solo.
After all the competitors have performed the judges will take a break to discuss.
The winner will be announced at the beginning of our Gala show which starts at 7pm.
The top three winners will be announced and presented on stage.
To stay after this, you will need a Gala show ticket.

Joelle is teaching a drumming workshop earlier in the day:
She is also working with Levana doing a tabla solo workshop.
I can recommend either or both of these to help you work with Joelle in the competition.
Joelle is a sensitive and inspiring tabla player who is used to working with dancers.  Part of her job is to follow your hips – but it is a partnership.  A live tabla solo is really a duet!
This is a really exciting opportunity that we are delighted to be hosting at Fantasia.
